Nipping at the heels of the gin craze, a ‘rumaissance’ is sweeping the nation, with annual sales of the tipple topping £1billion*. To cope with the demand, Puttshack mini golf has appointed the UK’s first Rummelier.
The position belongs to rum aficionado, Nat Mathieu, who grew up in the French Caribbean island of Martinique – home to some of the most renowned rum distilleries in the world.
With Puttshack stocking an impressive 127 different types of rum behind its bar, Mathieu’s responsibilities including sharing his expert knowledge and passion for the spirit with trainees, sourcing and keeping abreast of the latest rum trends, creating new cocktails and guiding customers through the new rum flights.
The spirit has always had a strong influence in Mathieu’s life and he grew up being culturally immersed in the world of rum, which has fuelled his infectious passion.
His grandfather worked in a local distillery and rum is part of the fabric of the Caribbean community. From providing people with livelihoods to boosting the economy and bringing people together socially to being used for its medicinal qualities to prevent common colds – rum has a special place in Mathieu’s heart.
