Harlow Council is to give the Town Centre’s Market Square a much-needed makeover turning the area into a new multi-use open space.
The Council is looking to appoint a contractor to create a new Market Square where residents of all ages can relax, play and eat. The Council’s plans* for the area include:
Providing new space to host a variety of events.
Encouraging traditional market trading and specialist markets.
Installing a new play and sports equipment like outdoor table tennis.
New open and covered seating and relaxing areas.
New landscaping, improved paving and litter bins.
Re-using existing red planters and planting new trees.
Removing existing decking, playground equipment and street furniture.
The improvements will be funded via the Council’s Capital Programme budget and will be designed in a way that can be added to in later years. After consultation with residents last summer and a working group of councillors it was decided to move ahead with this project.
The Council will also begin making further improvements throughout the town centre including replacing the Council’s street lamps, new cycle racks and public-access Wi-Fi in Market Square and Terminus Street Bus Station.
